This prolific author of sociologically and politically significant works, but most recognized as the master of the modern science fiction novel (The time machine, The island of Dr. Moreau, The invisible man, and The war of the worlds), was invited, in November 1935, to Hollywood for a lecture tour. He stayed in the home of Charles Chaplin, where he met Paulette and fell under her charm.

They are then often seen together playing sports or going out to mundane soirees accompanied in particular by Anita Loos . H.G. Wells, who was married twice, had many female conquests as well as two children out of wed-lock.
